Josie and "dad", happy again Josie, a 6-month-old, four-legged ball of mischief, has an appetite for clothing. Her favorite textile snacks are socks, but she will settle for a pair of underpants in a pinch. When her tummy started hurting and she began vomiting, her pet parent brought her to see her vet- erinarian, Dr. Elizabeth McMorran, at HometownAnimal Hospital inWeston. X-rays of her belly showed a large amount of material in her stomach. Follow-up x- rays taken hours later confirmed the diagnosis – the foreign objects in Josie’s stomach were not budging. Dr. McMorran and her team tried to remove the items using an endoscope with special grabbers, but they were stuck. Josie’s stomach had to be surgically opened to remove underpants and a sock that were bunched up inside her stomach. Fortunately Josie’s pet parents took Dr. Elizabeth’s advice to sign up for pet insurance. 90% of the fees related to her surgery were covered. Josie recovered like a champ, and her parents have been very careful to keep their laundry away from her. Foreign objects come in all shapes and sizes and although some can pass without surgical intervention, many need to be manually removed. Please keep socks, undergarments, smelly rags, and sweaty cloths away from your pets – these can turn into an obstruction quickly. Josie has a new nickname:“Miss Underpants”.We wish her all the best in her upcom- ing textile-free adventures.
